Patron
Legendary mountaineer and rock climber Joe Simpson is patron to Cliffhanger. Joe, who lives in Sheffield and has enjoyed recent further TV success with the film Beckoning Silence, said
'I am proud to be patron of the Cliffhanger event in my home city. It is really appropriate that Sheffield is hosting such a major event, as it is ideally placed to become the outdoor activities capital of this country, with a significant part of the city being within the Peak District National Park - this country's most popular national park offering so many outdoor pursuits on the doorstep.
I have been fortunate to be able to climb in many countries around the world, but I always love returning to Sheffield and the nearby Peak District, which has now become the home of many other climbing enthusiasts.'
Sheffield world first set to be massive boost for city's culture bid.
Sheffield-born world champion mountain biker Steve Peat helped announce a
major world first this week.
The city has teamed up with Russia, American, Switzerland, The Netherlands,
Austria and Germany to host a key stage in one of the biggest and hotly
contested world cup events on the planet - the IFSC Bouldering World Cup.
The announcement was part of the press launch for this year's Cliffhanger
event which is now lined up to be one of the highlights of the world's
climbing calendar and attract climbers and spectators from all over the
world.
World champion mountain biker Steve Peat gave journalists a taste of one of
scores of disciplines on offer at Cliffhanger - downhill mountain biking on
a custom built 'timber trail' set up at Sheffield's Millhouses Park.
Cliffhanger is now in its fourth year.
The massive family event is set to feature competitions and demonstrations
in climbing, orienteering, kayaking, mountain biking, running,
skateboarding, free running, adventure racing and more.
The activities are aimed at people of all ages.
Cliffhanger spokesperson Kevin Cheetham said: "We've always strived to make
Cliffhanger the perfect event for anyone from the serious climber to the
family that enjoys a leisurely stroll and each year but this year we are
really set to move up a gear and add a major boost for Sheffield's bid to
become the UK's City of Culture. Landing the IFSC Bouldering World Cup is a
massive coup for the city and shows just how far Cliffhanger has come in the
last four years."
The event is the brainchild of Sheffield City Council's Parks & Countryside
Department and has been developed to its current level with support from
Heason Events.
There will also be scuba diving, angling, kite flying, assault courses,
caving, a massive bargain area, music, plenty of children's rides and other
activities, food stalls, a market and much, much more.
